The primary goal of a risk assessment is to ensure the health and safety of staff, volunteers, clients and others who may be affected by the client visit.
Employers have a legal duty to conduct risk assessments and take reasonable steps to manage risks, as outlined by the Health and Safety Executive
The HSE recommends a structured approach to risk assessment, which involves the following steps:
- Identify the hazards: Determine what could cause harm in the workplace.
- Decide who might be harmed and how: Consider who could be exposed to the identified hazards and how they might be harmed.
- Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions: Assess the likelihood and severity of harm, and decide on appropriate control measures.
- Record your findings and implement them: Document the risk assessment, control measures, and any necessary actions.
- Review your risk assessment and update if necessary: Regularly review the risk assessment to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
